LAMP
Lamp on and the evening begins properly / A different kind of light than the rest of the day
QUEST
Questions are the maps of everyone who seeks the truth / Underneath each answer waits another open door
MERCY
Meeting someone at their lowest point / Even when you have the right to wound
NEXT
No one knows exactly where the following moment leads / Each step forward is also a step away from something
OCEAN
Over the drowned valleys the water is quiet / Cold and deep and moving in great circles
FROST
Feathering the window before daylight / Rimming the puddles with delicate glass
DIARY
Dated and dog-eared and slightly swollen / Ink that ran when the tea cup was too close
PEAK
Pushing through the cloud into open air / Everything below arranged in miniature
APART
All that separates is also pointing to what could connect / Perspective grows in proportion to the distance that you can accept
SONG
Soft melody surfacing from somewhere old / Only the chorus comes back clearly
CARE
Coming to the bedside without being asked / Answering the unspoken question
GLEE
Getting lost inside the moment / Loose with joy and moving freely
LIMIT
Loving your limits as teachers rather than enemies changes their effect / In knowing where you end, you also know where you most need attention
COST
Counting what a thing will cost is not the same as measuring its worth / Only the things that ask something real of you teach something real
BRAVE
Building something new from what was broken / Reaching past the limits of the comfort
COOK
Calm returned by the act of chopping / Oil and garlic and the kitchen comes alive
LEAF
Letting the wind choose where it finally lands / Each vein a map of summer running through it
GLEE
Growing large with something uncontained / Light that breaks through just for you
DUSK
Done with blue the sky begins its red / Under the ash trees the first moths stir
SWEET
Something given freely without cost / Worth more than all the grand and grander things
CREEK
Cold and clear and running without hesitation / Running stones into each other endlessly
HEAL
Healing is not getting back to where you were before / Every wound that closes leaves the tissue stronger than before
OCEAN
Over the drowned valleys the water is quiet / Cold and deep and moving in great circles
DREAM
Drifting into a place both invented and recalled / Remembered clearly for thirty seconds and then not
FEEL
Feeling is the oldest and most accurate instrument you have / Every emotion carries information, even the uncomfortable ones
RAGE
Rising like a flood without a warning / All the patience worn down to the bone
PEACE
Pulling inward to the wordless center / Each breath becoming simpler and more full
FAITH
Footsteps into what you cannot see / All you carry forward is the wanting
CREEK
Cold and clear and running without hesitation / Running stones into each other endlessly
SCENT
Sun on the sheets brought in from the line / Cedar in the drawer with the winter things
BREAD
Baked from a recipe learned from someone gone / Rising on the counter while snow falls outside
NIGHT
Noticing things only the quiet brings forward / In the pause between sleeping and the alarm
CLOCK
Changed last Saturday and still feels wrong / Looking at it more since the days got shorter
REST
Returning to stillness is not giving up, it is refueling / Even the strongest river has its quiet places to collect
MEAN
More than words, the intention behind them is the meaning / Every message carries two things: what is said and what is felt
ALIVE
Approaching the day as though it is the only one is a practice / Living with the awareness of impermanence makes presence a priority
FEAR
Freezing at the edge of the unknown / Every shadow seems to breathe
LEAF
Letting the wind choose where it finally lands / Each vein a map of summer running through it
BLISS
Bathing in a light that has no name / Letting go of every weight
